Who are your favorite artists?
It’s hard to classify works like Vermeer’s Girl With One Pearl Earring or Klimt’s The Kiss. People know them because they’re great, and I think they’re great too. I enjoy strolling through art museums when I get the chance. The work there is beautiful and inspirational. They are reflections of life. An individual’s interpretation of their world. So art is in the everyday.
I’m a high school teacher, and my kids are doing descriptive essays right now. They’re marvelous. I’ve got one doing an extended metaphor using military references to describe the Frio River. Another is describing an abandoned church using the places rays of sunlight touch through broken stained glass as her organizational strategy.
And then I have conversations with my own children where I get little thrills of shock when they say something particularly insightful. When my husband does something for me out of love. When the flowers in my garden bloom just right and it takes my breath away. The beautiful in the everyday inspires art and is art itself.
